Walk for Farm Animals

Oct 23, 2013 by

Last Saturday was the Walk for Farm Animals benefiting Farm Sanctuary. Driving down to Manhattan on Saturday morning, I gave myself an hour to find a parking space. It took an hour to find a parking space. Oy! But…it was worth it! First of all, I would like to thank everyone who made a donation to my walk, the animals appreciate that. We checked in at the 59th St. and Columbus Circle entrance. At 10am there was yoga to help us warm up. I am not a yoga aficionado, in fact, I pretty much suck at it but I do like to do it occasionally so I did try to enjoy this mini class. Jessy took a million pix, laughing the whole time. There was quite a crowd walking! Gene Bauer was there…a little...

Getting More/Better Sleep

Oct 14, 2013 by

I came across this infographic at Greatlist and it really resinated with me. I have always had trouble sleeping, well, getting to sleep and then the waking up part…not something I do very well either. I looked over this and learned a few things, why I feel sleepy some days (not enough sleep in general, checking emails before bed, sleeping with my dogs [that will NEVER stop, tho!!], snooze that alarm!) I’m going to make some changes and see if that helps. I WILL TRY TO GO TO BED AT 10PM! Oy, if this is possible, and then I’ll TRY TO GET UP AT 7AM! Gd help me, if I can really do that consistantly. I’ll start tonight, I hope!! Get health and fitness tips at Greatist.com Share...

Catskill Animal Sanctuary Shindig...

Oct 7, 2013 by

Saturday, Jessy and I made the hour and a half trip up to the Catskill Animal Sanctuary for their 12th annual shindig!  We were definitely in for a nice day.  Weatherwise, it was cloudy and 70’s, perfect, no rain and no sun!! Parking was offsite and it was a bit of a wait for the bus to come around but it wasn’t too bad, if you don’t mind cheese buses! The farm was our next  stop! Fun music! I love the pigs! The cows are just so sweet and BIG!! Chickens, roosters and geese, OH MY! This rooster protects his hens! My favorite story of the day was of Noelle.  She is a sheep and had escaped from a factory farm in Brooklyn (who knew).  She was pregnant at the time and was saved...

Farro for Breakfast!

Sep 22, 2013 by

I wanted something different for breakfast on this beatiful first day of fall so decided to try some 10 minute Farro I had from Trader Joes. The result is simple and very delicious! PrintFarro for Breakfast! Prep Time: 5 minutesCook Time: 20 minutesTotal Time: 30 minutes Serving Size: 3 Ingredients8.8 oz Package 10 Minute Farro from Trader Joes 1 Banana 1/2 tbl Grade B Maple Syrup 1 tbl (or more!) Sunflower Seeds (walnuts, almonds would also be great!) CinnamonInstructionsBoil up a pot of water as per Farro instructions, I like to add 1/2 tsp of salt after it's boiling, then add Farro and cook for about 10-12 minutes then drain. In a bowl add about half a cup of Farro (or however much you are hungry for!), sliced banana, sunflower seeds and cinnamon. Enjoy!3.1http://theveganyenta.com/2013/09/22/farro-for-breakfast/...

World Premier of Speciesism the Movie...

Sep 19, 2013 by

In a word…WOW! ! I got the invite to this premier from The NYC Vegetarian/Vegan Meetup and I realized this could be a very important movie and immediately said yes! Speciesism the Movie is a provocative and compelling movie that asks the question, should humans consider themselves the most important species on the planet and what are the ethical implications of that kind of thinking? Writer and Director, Mark Devries, who became vegan during the filming, is not your typical filmmaker, certainly not for this subject, when, after seeing some PETA demonstrations, decided to research further.  He began this film when he was 20 and finished it at 23 and put it on the shelf for 3 years while he went to law school.  Luckily for us, he didn’t always keep it on the shelf...

Dinner Before the Movie at The Loving Hut!...

Sep 19, 2013 by

On my way to see the world premier of Speciesism The Movie (more on that in my next post but, just to say, GO SEE IT!) I stopped at The Loving Hut for dinner.  The Loving Hut is a chain throughout the US (major concentration in California…hmmm).  Since I’ve only been to this one in New York (there is one in Brooklyn), all I can say is that it is small, very small, with small round tables along one side with a bench at the wall and a few chairs around, very cozy.  If there was a huge sitting breakfast/lunch/dinner crowd, then things might get uncomfortable but while I was there, they were doing a brisk take out service.  The woman who waited on me couldn’t have been nicer.  I was supposed to meet my friend...

Dinner Before the Fast

Sep 16, 2013 by

A little late in my posting but not too late to enjoy this meal.  I am a big fan of one pot meals and this fills the bill.  Once the pasta is cooked, you basically put everything in one pot, cook for awhile and voila!, a meal is born, one that is loved by my most picky eaters! A variation on VegNews Creamy Tomato Vodka Pasta. PrintCreamy Tomato Mushroom Pasta Cook Time: 30 minutes Yield: Enough for 2nds and 3rdsServing Size: 1 - 1 1/2 cups This is a creamy (thanks to the vegan cream cheese), tangy (thanks to the vodka and diced tomatoes) and rich pasta dish. It tasted really good the night before the fast but it also reheats well to eat a day (or in this case!) or two later! Enjoy!Ingredients1 bag...
